Final Round Hopes For Injured Öncü

Can Öncü (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) is working towards being fit enough to be permitted to ride at the final round of the 2024 FIM Supersport World Championshiop season, which will be held at the Circuito de Jerez - Angel Nieto between 18-20 October.

Having suffered a deep knee wound in a crash at the Estoril round of the championship just a few days ago, Can had several stitches inserted to aid with his recovery. He will travel to Jerez hoping to race but first of all he has to be declared fit to compete by the specialist FIM medical officials who will examine him on-site in Spain.

Both Can and his Kawasaki Puccetti Racing team are particularly keen to compete at Jerez as this will be the final outing of the legendary Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R in its current 599cc form.

Next season Manuel Puccetti’s team will run a 636cc version of the Ninja ZX-6R, which is currently undergoing the required homologation checks before it can be raced in the WorldSSP Championship in 2025.

If Can is able to ride this coming weekend he will face two races at Jerez, which forms the 12th and final round of the season. Öncü is 13th overall as things stand, with a total of 92 points.

Mexican rider Guillermo Moreno (Viamo by MTM Kawasaki) is set to ride again after his first WorldSSP experience in Estoril on the team’s Ninja ZX-6R.

Can Öncü, stated: “I want to do all I can during this last 2024 championship weekend to round out what’s been a challenging season in a positive way. I feel good and hope to get the OK from the doctors so that I can race. It’ll be good to get back on my bike and work with my team again.”

Manuel Puccetti, Team Principal, commented: “We’re gearing up for a weekend we might call historic. As of next year, we’ll be the official Kawasaki Ninja team in both WorldSSP and WorldSBK, an achievement that fills us with pride but also a sense of responsibility. We will do our best all the way to the chequered flag, just as we’ve always done. For Jerez, we hope that Can is fully recovered from the accident in Portugal.”
